Ali Kata Ella

Ali Kata Ella is located about 1 km along the Balangoda–Kalawana road from Balangoda town near Kahatapitiya Junction. Turning left at the junction onto Batugammana Road and traveling approximately 4 km, then walking about 500 meters from the small shop on the left, you will reach Ali Kata Ella. The waterfall originates from a descent of the Walawe River. Historically, the waterfall’s shape resembled an elephant’s mouth, which is how it got its name. However, due to gem mining activities, the elephant-mouth shape has been lost, though its beauty remains. The water flows over large rocks, creating a gentle splashing sound, which intensifies the visual beauty during periods of low water flow. While not very high, the waterfall is wide. About 500 meters downstream from the fall, there is a pond-like area with deep water, locally called “Weli Kumbura,” where large fish such as caffiens, river prawns, korali, red korali, and teppili can be found. Many deep pools formed by rocks make walking in the area risky, and this is not a safe place for swimming for inexperienced visitors.
