Location:
From Balangoda town, proceed about 3 km on Kalthota Road, then turn at Kirimatithenna junction. Continue approximately 2 km on the Weligepola Road; on the right side, in a pleasant environment, is the Balangoda Pradeshiya Sabha Incinerator.
Crematorium Reservation
(01) Legal Authority
- The Cemeteries and Burial Grounds Ordinance, read together with Section 127 of the Local Authorities Act No. 15 of 1987.
- The interim regulations for crematoriums prepared by the Provincial Council Institution.
- The Code of Criminal Procedure, applicable in cases where a dead body is to be cremated.
(02) Eligibility
- The deceased person must be someone whose death was due to a sudden accident or any other reason, and in whose inquest there has been no prohibition order issued against cremation, or someone who died of natural causes.
- The body must not be of a person who has committed suicide.
- The deceased must have been residing within the Balangoda electorate.
- If the deceased was from outside the Balangoda electorate, an additional fee will be charged.
(03) Fee
👉 A fee determined in advance by the Council shall be charged.
Cremation Service Charges
- For a deceased person within the Balangoda electorate – Rs. 17,000.00
- For a deceased person outside the Balangoda electorate – Rs. 18,000.00
(04) Required Documents
- Crematorium Application Form
- The original Death Certificate of the deceased or a temporary certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, or the certificate issued by the inquest authority (B18).
(These certificates must state that cremation is permitted and that the crematorium at Damahana is recorded.) - National Identity Card of the applicant.
* Free of Charge Service
👉 The cremation of bodies of residents who died at elderly or disabled care homes will be provided free of charge.
(Such deaths must be certified by the Grama Niladhari or the Divisional Secretary confirming that the deceased was a resident of a registered elderly or disabled home.)
(05) Procedure
- Visit or contact the office by phone to inquire about the date, time, and required documents.
- Visit the office with the required documents. The subject officer will verify them and provide the application form to the applicant.
- After completing the application form, the subject officer will complete the office copy and receipt book, obtain the head of institution’s signature, approval, and official seal, and refer the applicant to the revenue office for payment.
- The revenue office will issue a payment receipt and the cremation permit to the applicant.
- The subject officer will inform the crematorium operator via telephone regarding the payment and the scheduled cremation date and time.
- The subject officer will record the cremation details in the official register.
